POSITION TITLE:  Business Retention & Expansion Coordinator

REPORTS TO:  General Manager


  • Post-secondary education related to Business and/or Economic Development with a minimum of four (4) years of experience, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience organizing and delivering projects.
  • Strong and proven detail-oriented project management skills including planning, organizing, designing, implementing, analyzing and evaluating.
  • Business organizational skills in multi-tasking, time management, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to lead meetings, record, facilitate and report out.
  • Superior English language communication skills including document writing along with development and delivery of presentations.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholder groups including industry, government, community leaders and volunteers.
  • Professionalism, diplomacy, good judgement in all actions and activities.
  • Marketing skills in promotion utilizing multiple communication channels.
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and as a team, takes initiative and is reliable.
  • Sound judgment and ability in handling matters of a confidential and/or sensitive nature as it relates to senior business executives, Council and other senior staff.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently to locations within Lanark County and region.
  • A valid driver’s license and use of a reliable vehicle is required.

The Business Retention & Expansion Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the Lanark County Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program under the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs program guidelines. This is a one-year contract position starting immediately.  Responsibilities will include the design, planning, organizing and delivery of all BR+E activities in the county-wide program, which will involve all municipalities in Lanark County, their staff, volunteers, members of the business community, and other stakeholders.  Confidentiality is required and responsibilities will continue through to implementation and evaluation of resulting local action plans of the BR&E program.



  1. Perform the responsibilities of the position, in conjunction with the Regional Economic Development Officer, within the legislative standards set out in the applicable Provincial and Federal legislation. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation.
  2. Develop a work plan and implement the county-wide BR+E project schedule for the Lanark County BR+E program and its member municipalities.
  3. Identify and recruit volunteers for the Lanark County BR+E program. Liaise with municipal Leadership Team members, Visitation Coordinators, Media Coordinators, Immediate Action Coordinators and the volunteers from all municipal BR+E teams, as applicable.
  4. Prepare communication materials for the program including letters, agendas, minutes, contracts, surveys and presentations.
  5. Organize training for visitation coordinators and volunteers.
  6. Develop and co-ordinate business visitation plans with volunteers, in collaboration with municipal visitation coordinators. Monitor and track business visitations and survey completion.
  7. Collect and enter data, complete analysis of business needs.
  8. Advise of significant and immediate business challenges that arise from the business visitations. Provide support to challenges in consultation with the Regional Economic Development Officer.
  9. Prepare final reports and presentations.
  10. As a primary contact and spokesperson for the Lanark County BR&E, represent Valley Heartland and Lanark County Economic Development with various government, community organizations and business groups.
  11. Participate in regional economic development planning activities as relates to the BR&E program.
  12. Prepare and submit reports as requested.
  13. Other BR&E related duties, as requested or required.


Results Expected

  • Overall progress of project will be regularly monitored/tracked
  • Local action plans will be implemented in response to survey findings
  • Evaluation will occur to determine the extent to which actions/projects are achieving desired objectives and to reflect on the reasons for success and/or lack of success
